Steve Beshear on ending Kentucky health care insurance: 'I cannot sit idly by'
We'll soon be discussing health care reform.  What do you think about this real-time, real-life situation in Kentucky?  This article gives some background, but there's more research to do.  Let's try to figure it out together, separately from what the politicians are saying (although, of course, it is a political issue).

The Lab (25 Feb)

First post: What did you discover about making good choices in The Lab?  Was it easier or harder than you imagined?  Argue from one of the following positions:  What would someone like Pellegrino do in the The Lab?  What would Kant or a Utilitarian do?  What does ethics of care ask of you?

Second post: engage your peers in a compassionate but challenging dialogue and/or try to argue from a point of view you don't actually believe.

Case 8 Nursing Autonomy/Subservience :) (23 & 25 Feb)

Collectively, address the questions at the end of the case (read what the people ahead of you have written and join in the conversation, rather than just responding to the prompt).  Incorporate your ethical theories, and the readings on Nursing (that we discussed to today in class) and on informed consent in your posts.  After you've made an initial post (due by 23 Feb), critically respond to the post of a classmate's (due by 25 Feb).  Be charitable but challenging.

Case 25 Anencephalic newborns (11 Feb)

Let's continue our discussion about Case 25 here.  Try to pull in your ethical theories to inform your answers to the questions at the end of the case.

Case 27 re: artificial nutrition (11Feb)

Case 27 re: artificial nutrition

Answer questions at end of case, using one of your theories. Let's cover all the theories, so just rotate to the next one on a first-come, first-serve basis. About half of you will have to double, maybe even triple up.
The theories: Kant, Utilitarianism, Virtue Ethics, Casuistry, Ethics of Care, Ross' Principles, Principles of Bioethics, Coherence theory.

Then critique each other. Each person pick another post and analyze the response.  Be charitable.
