This is crazy to even imagine that someone who knows they have it would purposely chance their spouses life. It proves that even in the most ethical situations people still act based on themselves. Kant would be furious at anyone who would act so selfishly in this way. The utilitarian view would be completely against this idea to not tell and risk infection because by not, this person puts more at risk then before. The husband did not make the most ethical decision he could have made.

HIV or the human immunodeficiency virus is a retrovirus from the genus Lentivirus that attacks the bodies lymphocytes. HIV can be transmitted via blood, semen, vaginal fluid, or breast milk and present as both free virus particles and as infected immune cells. Some ways to prevent the transmission is safe sex, needle-exchange programs, treating those infected and circumcision. HIV itself isn't necessarily the biggest concern but the other diseases that accompany HIV or are more common in HIV presence such as certain types of cancer, shingles, tuberculoses, lymphoma, wasting syndrome, and HIV dementia. AIDS is the condition resulting from the HIV virus and is known as Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome.It is most prevalent in Sub-Saharan Africa where about 24.7 million are infected about 71% of the global total. On a more local scale the largest percentage of the population infected is southern Indiana, and the northeastern population of the United States.

The following link is to an article that was just published on March 1, 2016 by the World Health Organization about discrimination in health care against people who have HIV or AIDS. It identifies the stigmas and common discriminations associated with having HIV/AIDS. This issue can definitely relate to many of the cases we talk about in class, and not just those associated with HIV and AIDS.

ReplyDeleteHere is the CDC's statistics page on HIV. It is crazy that more than 1 million people have HIV! Even more crazy that 1 in 8 people do not even know they have it! Also, in those statistics, the majority of those affected with HIV are bisexual/gay men. Over 650,000 people in the US have died with AIDS. Also, 50,000 new infections a year! This needs to be controlled or stopped in our lifetime! The most common spread is drug use and sexual exchange of body fluids. I believe that America needs to step up our protection advertising. Condoms and clean needles can dramatically lower the risk of being infected with HIV.

In some states, if you do not disclose your status to the partner you're sleeping with, it's defined as pre-mediated murder.

ReplyDeleteThis source contains some interesting demographic info on HIV and AIDs as well as some other general statistics. For one, it states that 1 in 8 people infected with HIV in the U.S. are unaware that they have the virus. To me this is quite a scary statistic. Also,it states that 1 in 4 new infections in the U.S. occur in the age range of 13-24. A final statistic that I found interesting is that worldwide there are 2.6 million children with HIV.

The craziest part of these statistics for me is the fact that 54% of people with HIV know that they have the virus. This could indicate that the virus may not be seen as the threat that it is given that people may not have themselves tested as much as they should. I think that a larger effort should be made to make the general public aware of their HIV status. This could be very effective in preventing further spread of the disease.

ReplyDeleteJust found this article. It is about the first HIV-positive person, to be diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. The article mentions that experts believed HIV might protect against Alzheimer’s. I don’t know if this is true or if there is even a connection, but it sounds like an interesting topic to do further research on.
This is a very interesting article because of how it discusses how one disease such as HIV can protect and prevent something like Alzheimer disease.

I did a whole research paper on AIDS, and while a lot of it is mentioned or hinted at above, there is an journal article from Spirig and his colleagues that mentioned that HIV/AIDS treatment has changed since 2005. Since ARTs are hard to adhere to, there is a lot more emphasis on symptom management. This takes into account the frequency, duration, and severity of the side effects of the ARTs, such as nausea, pain, and diarrhea, and the different emotional tolls that occur with the disease. As Alex mentioned, this disease has torn families apart, which in turn does not help the patient. New treatments try to find emotional support systems so that these people do not feel abandoned. Ultimately, they want to make these people happier so that they feel better.
